Identities, be they local, national, regional, cultural or ideological, are deeply held values with physical or psychological boundaries that can both unify and divide real or imagined communities. This program offers in-depth discussions of the forces that shape cultural identities and their social and political implications in Chinese societies today. Topics covered include: modern and contemporary Chinese nationalism; Singapore’s nation-building and civic pride; identity shifts in Taiwan; Hong Kong’s social and cultural change; youth culture and fluid identities; and the roles of history, culture and policy in identity shaping and reinforcement.
