Cross-Strait Dilemmas: Challenges Facing Taipei, Beijing and Washington
Three trends are shaping the uneasy relationships across the Taiwan Strait: Taiwan’s enmeshment in a high-income trap featuring slower growth, increasing inequality, an aging population, and rising dissatisfaction among youth; the rise of China’s economic and military power, along with mounting pressure on Taiwan for eventual unification; and the emergence of a distinctive Taiwanese identity, accompanied by a declining interest in political union with China. Shirley will analyze all three of these trends, and then address the dilemmas they pose for Washington, Beijing, and Taiwan itself.
