Struggle for Democracy in Asia: Regression, Resilience, Revival

Asia is of crucial importance to the future of democracy and its global struggle with autocracy in the 21st century. Consolidated democracies are still the exception in Asia, and many aspiring democracies have suffered setbacks amid the ongoing wave of democratic regression. However, the Asia-Pacific region is still much more democratic today than it was 30 years ago. The Bertelsmann Transformation Index’s data and country reports show that Asia offers important insights into the factors and mechanisms that can slow democratic decay.

Our 60-minute seminar and Q&A will be joined by Aurel Croissant (Heidelberg University), Maiko Ichihara (Stanford University/Hitotsubashi Univ. Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy), Syaru Shirley Lin (University of Virginia/The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and moderated by Tony Silberfeld.
